Foreword

foreword

This online course presents a succession of lessons about Electromagnetism. The lessons are enclosed in the following topics:

  • EM Fundamentals
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
  • Magneto-Telluric (MT)
  • Onshore CSEM (controlled- source electromagnetic methods)
  • Marine CSEM (mCSEM)
  • Seismo-electric method

Each topic has an introduction and a series of lessons. A lesson is made of text, digital media (image or video).

Every text has been voluntarily minimized, illustrated by the digital media content to get straight to the point about theory, methods or surveys examples.

Near-surface Geophysics, away from our immediate scope of interest except for GPR, that relies on several Electric and EM methods shall not be discussed in the time being. Some could still be quoted:

  • DC Resistivity and Electric Resistivity Tomography. On the online course of geophysics developed under the supervision of Dominique Chapellier (Institute of Geophysics, university of Lausanne) and Jean Luc Mari (IFP School, IFP energies nouvelles), the reader is invited to look at a chapter which presents the geoelectric methods in DC based on the measurement of the resistivity parameter from the surface (http://www-ig.unil.ch/).
  • VLF (Very Low Frequency, sensitive to conductivity variation down to 100 meters deep, utilizes signal from 15 to 30 kHz normally used for naval transmitters for submarine communications, several transmitters broadcast over the world).
  • Induced Polarization (relies on the chargeability capacities of matter).
  • Spontaneous Polarization.

This online EM course does not constitute a complete course in itself; referral to references remains essential. To do so, the reader is kindly invited to take note of our selection of references, gathering fundamental papers and books.

For media based on field data measurements, the authors and/or organisms that provide with them are mentioned and acknowledged.
