A graduate of the Institut Physique du Globe Strasbourg and IFP School (Petroleum Geosciences, major in geophysics in 1978), Jean‑Luc Mari was hired by IFP Energies nouvelles in 1979. He worked on several projects as a research engineer in the Geophysics Department.

In 1984, he was awarded a PhD in Astronomy and Celestial Mechanics by the Université Pierre et Marie Curie. In 1986, he was seconded to ELF Aquitaine where he worked on reservoir geophysics. He returned to IFP Energies nouvelles in 1987 in the Reservoir Department.

In 1994, he was appointed to IFP School as a professor and he defended a thesis at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in order to receive accreditation to supervise research on Earth Sciences.

Jean-Luc Mari is at present a geophysics professor at IFP School and an IFP Energies nouvelles expert. He supervises the specialization in Lithosphere, Basins, Petroleum part of the Master's program in Science and Technology (Paris 6).

He is associate professor at the école Nationale des Ingénieurs de Tunis and lecturer at Polytech Paris 6.

He is a member of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers. He is associate editor for Near Surface Geophysics. He is a member of the board of "AGAP Qualité". "AGAP Qualité"is an association delivering certification in Applied Geophysics.

He was the recipient of a French national educational service award "Palmes Académiques" in 2010.

Jean-Luc Mari is author and co-author of patents (in the field of acoustic well logging), numerous scientific articles and books on geophysical methods and signal processing.

He has been involved in the design and development of specific teaching aids:

His main fields of expertise are seismic acquisition, seismic processing and reservoir and civil engineering geophysics.

He has a keen interest in "Épinal" pictures.
