A seismic signal is characterized by a wavelet and a transfer function. The signal is dispersive if the transfer function between two receivers contains a non-linear phase term with the frequency.
The group velocity is due to the displacement of the envelope of the signals. The phase velocity is a function of the delay of the carrier. The measurement of group and phase velocities is illustrated on synthetic data.
